Hosts Malaysia avoided the wooden spoon when they defeated Pakistan 3-1 at the Taman Daya Hockey Stadium.

"I had nothing to do with the win as the players planned the match themselves," said Malaysian coach Arul Selvaraj.

"The players realized that the team was capable of playing better and they had an hour long meeting to talk things over.

"Overall I am happy with their performance in the tournament and the fifth placing is not a fair reflection of their ability."

Malaysia took the lead in the sixth minute as Norsyafiq Sumantri sent a pin point pass to skipper Haziq Samsul who unleashed a reverse stick hit that sailed into goal.

Pakistan were off colour and hardly threatened the Malaysian defense.

And Malaysia doubled its advantage in the 24th minute as Mohd Najmi Farizal Jazlan converted a penalty corner.

Shahril Saabah got into the scoring act by converting a cleverly worked penalty corner in the 32nd minute to put Malaysia 3-0 ahead.

Pakistan reduced the deficit in the 45th minute as Muhammad Naveed scored from an acute angle.

In the end Malaysia held on to finish fifth.
