The Junior Black Sticks Men’s team, which is part of the Owen G Glenn Future Black Sticks programme, has been named for the 2nd Sultan of Johor Cup in Malaysia from 11-18 November.

The 18-strong line-up has been finalised following the selection camp in Counties Manukau last weekend. Coach Grant Edwards says the young team is impressive and shows real potential.

“This was a difficult team to select as everyone put in a sound performance at the selection camp, which was pleasing. It’s important to note also, that these athletes selected are all available and eligible for the 2013 Junior World Cup,” says Edwards.

The 2013 Junior World Cup, likely to be in December in India, will be the Junior Black Sticks Men’s first milestone event of the Owen G Glenn Future Black Sticks Programme.

In the build-up to the Sultan of Johor Cup, the side will be put through their paces in a training camp from 12-14 October focusing specifically on attacking circle work, goal scoring, ability to defend counter attacks, and attacking and defensive penalty corners.

There are four players named from last year’s tournament - Kane Russell, Brennan Alexander-Parker, Jared Panchia and Zac Woods. The side will take on Germany, Australia, Pakistan, India and Malaysia.

Selected Capital player Scott Kearney says this team has a good balance of ages and personalities, many coming through the TigerTurf Junior Academy programme together.

“For most of us, this will be our first time exposed to international competition, so it’s pretty hard to tell how we’ll perform. We’re pretty keen to improve on the performance from last year and know we’ll get a good gauge on the skill of the team against some of the stronger nations like Germany,” says Kearney.

The Owen G Glenn Future Black Sticks programme is a critical part of Hockey New Zealand’s high performance programme. It is focused on providing individual player development in all technical and tactical aspects of the game. The programme is delivered through the regional talent programmes under the direction of the national coaches and service providers.

The team will depart for the 2nd Sultan of Johor Cup from Auckland on Thursday 8 November at 1.30pm on flight SQ286. They are scheduled to play the first match of the tournament against Pakistan on Sunday 11 November at 4.05pm Malaysia time / 8.05pm NZ time.
